Description:
The state of Minnesota is committed to using structured literacy as its primary focus for teaching reading. There is a tremendous amount of information available to teachers; so much, that it can be very difficult to know where to start. For some, LETRS training has been an entrance point for their learning about the science of reading. However, the expense, intensity, and time commitment, may not be a good match for some educators. Shifting the Balance, 6 Ways to Bring the Science of Reading into the Balance Literacy Classroom: The Online Course, is an excellent resource that serves a similar purpose as LETRS, but in a more manageable and practical way.
In partnership with authors Kari Yates and Jan Burkins, Sourcewell has customized the course for regional educators. Participants will not only engage in the content but will also network with other regional participants to consider practical application and systems implementation.
About the leader:
Kari Yates is an educator, author, speaker, and coach with a passion for helping busy literacy educators thrive. Her teaching experiences include time as a classroom teacher, special education teacher, and Reading Recovery teacher. Yates has also spent the last 16 years serving as an elementary principal and district level administrator. The connecting thread of all of her experiences in schools has been a passion for early literacy success as well as providing effective leadership for change. Yate's goal is to help other educators discover, “What’s next?” on the road to helping all students thrive.
