Introduction to Education

Teachers and leaders: start growing your own future educators today. Your 10, 11, and 12th graders can explore their interest in becoming an educator! 

Students: explore your interest in becoming an educator! This course will introduce students to the broad field of education including a focus on children and families, the role of the teacher, the role of schools and education programs in communities and broader society, history and philosophy of education, educational futures, teacher education knowledge base, and contemporary issues. The course includes 30 hours of classroom observation and experience in home district classrooms.

What to expect

  • This course is a collaboration between Sourcewell and St. Cloud State University (SCSU), and tuition is paid for by an MDE concurrent enrollment grant. Students who successfully complete this course earn three credits transferrable to all Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MNSCU).
  • The course will be held during first hour (typically 8:15-9:05) and meets synchronously weekly or bi-weekly throughout the semester. Students should have this hour free each day throughout the semester, as the course includes course content that requires their time and effort between synchronous meetings, as well as required observation hours in cooperating teachers' classrooms.
