Description:
Join us for an enriching, hands-on session that delves into the world of toy adaptation, designed to empower children with disabilities to engage fully in play. This activity is part of our continuing effort within the Assistive Technology Community of Practice (AT CoP) to build skills and capacity among colleagues. AT CoP clients will support you through the activity.
Please bring a toy(s) and batteries, and we will provide the rest!
The ease of switch adapting a toy depends on its design and construction. Generally, toys with simple electronic features and straightforward activation mechanisms are easier to adapt.
Here are some examples of toys that are commonly considered easy to switch adapt:
Battery-Operated Toys:
Many battery-operated toys have simple on/off switches that can be easily adapted with an external switch.
Consider toys with a single function, such as turning on/off or playing a short sequence of sounds or music.
Cause-and-Effect Toys:
Toys that respond to a simple action, like pushing a button or squeezing, are often easy to switch adapt.
Look for toys that produce lights, sounds, or movement in response to a basic trigger.
Again, consider toys that have a single activation method.
The hands-on learning approach for this workshop is designed for all experience/comfort levels with toy adaptation so you can learn at a pace that suits you. Our hope is that you will leave with the confidence and knowledge to be able to adapt toys in your own district(s). NO DEATH-BY-POWERPOINT will be experienced at this workshop!
