Learning objectives:

  • Use common technology with confidence for everyday tasks at home and work, including recognizing devices and how they connect.

  • Understand how digital information is stored and managed and choose appropriate storage locations.

  • Protect personal and private information by recognizing what should stay confidential and spotting common scams like phishing, fake websites, and suspicious messages.

Description:

This beginner‑friendly session is designed for those working in local government, public safety, or nonprofit organizations who want to feel more confident using everyday technology. Participants will learn the basics of computers, internet connections, and common digital tools in clear, non-technical language. The training also focuses on staying safe online. Attendees will learn how to recognize common scams, phishing attempts, and suspicious messages, as well as simple steps to protect personal and work information. No prior technical experience is required!

About the leader:

Matt Nelles, IT Member Consultant with the League of Minnesota Cities and Christian Torkelson, Cybersecurity Loss Control Consultant with the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust will lead this training.

Matt Nelles brings nearly 20 years of professional IT experience. Matt brings a uniquely broad technical skill set and creative problem-solving approach to complex IT challenges. Christian Torkelson is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). Christian has IT and cybersecurity experience in the private, government, and nonprofit sectors.
